Land management support
The Land Management Support Program provides specialised technical support and assistance to landholders, the general community and KI NRM Board to facilitate best practice land management techniques. The programs provides a mix of locally based staff as well as access to a broad range of visiting technical experts in a wide range of fields including revegetation and agronomic advice, salinity management, hydrology, and land management. Local staff provide an essential link and conduit of information between the farming community and other NRM programs.
The Land Management Advice Program provides the following services:
- Provision of high level technical advice to the Board and wider community on salinity management.
- Monitoring of the groundwater across KI through a suite of piezometers.
- Interpretation and collation of data on the health of the Island’s soils.
- Assistance to land managers to adopt best practice land management techniques through the running of field days, farm walks, written material and liaison with relevant industry and community groups.
- Provision of technical advice to landholders, applying for funding through the on-ground works program in the areas of revegetation, agronomy (perennial pastures) and land management.
- Provision of advice and assistance to the general community, including other NRM programs and staff, regarding the full range of land management/sustainable agricultural issues on Kangaroo Island.
- Acting as a conduit between the community, local NRM Board and off-Island Government agencies, in particular PIRSA, SARDI and DWLBC with respect to land management issues.
- Development of specific revegetation and habitat restoration management plans at the property level.
