Assisting landholders

The KI NRM Board provides landholders with advice for:

  • On-ground works
  • Bush management
  • Land management

On-ground works support

The KI NRM Board operates an On-ground Works Program that takes a range of measures to support land managers in addressing salinity, biodiversity and soil conservation and sustainably managing land on a landscape scale. This program continues over 15 years of work funded by the National Landcare Program (NAP), Natural Heritage Trust (NHT) and National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality (NAP). Research from other programs on KI is used to determine the range of on-ground works offered to land managers to ensure the sustainable management of the Island’s natural resources.

The Board also operates the KI Seedbank propagating local species for the best results with restorative works.

The last round of assistance to landholders offered funds for:

  • fencing existing native vegetation
  • fencing saltland areas
  • planting native trees and shrubs
  • perennial pasture establishment
  • clay spreading
  • clay delving
  • lime application
  • saltland agronomy assistance.
  •

No funding rounds are open at present.

    Bush Management Advice

The Bush Management Adviser (BMA) on Kangaroo Island provides local support, skills and information to landholders and community members so they can undertake actions to assist in biodiversity conservation and management, including the identification and management of threats and the recovery of threatened species. This includes identification of significant assets, including vegetation communities, flora and fauna, and management of threats, such as fragmentation, environmental weeds and Phytophthora. The BMA also acts as a link and conduit of information between the local community and other NRM programs.

    The BMA works to:

    • provide biodiversity information and technical and planning support to community, industry and government
    • develop, approve and assist with implementation of Heritage Agreement Management Plans
    • assist with development of Landscape Scale Management Plans for priority areas, an approach that allows for the management of multiple patches of remnant vegetation with like assets, threats and management needs
    • improve knowledge of vegetation communities and their habitat significance, relevant to long term management and protection of remnant vegetation
    • provide advice on best practice revegetation and habitat restoration to landholders and community groups, in liaison with the On-ground Works Program
    • assist with communication and implementation of results and recommendations of threatened species, biodiversity monitoring and other scientific programs at a property level
    • establish links within and between priority bioregions in line with the ‘Naturelinks’ philosophy
    • promote the protection of under-represented and threatened species habitats, by inclusion within Heritage Agreements and DEH reserves.

    Land management support

The Land Management Support Program provides specialised technical support and assistance to landholders, the general community and KI NRM Board to facilitate best practice land management techniques. The programs provides a mix of locally based staff as well as access to a broad range of visiting technical experts in a wide range of fields including revegetation and agronomic advice, salinity management, hydrology, and land management. Local staff provide an essential link and conduit of information between the farming community and other NRM programs.

The Land Management Advice Program provides the following services:

    • Provision of high level technical advice to the Board and wider community on salinity management.
    • Monitoring of the groundwater across KI through a suite of piezometers.
    • Interpretation and collation of data on the health of the Island’s soils.
    • Assistance to land managers to adopt best practice land management techniques through the running of field days, farm walks, written material and liaison with relevant industry and community groups.
    • Provision of technical advice to landholders, applying for funding through the on-ground works program in the areas of revegetation, agronomy (perennial pastures) and land management.
    • Provision of advice and assistance to the general community, including other NRM programs and staff, regarding the full range of land management/sustainable agricultural issues on Kangaroo Island.
    • Acting as a conduit between the community, local NRM Board and off-Island Government agencies, in particular PIRSA, SARDI and DWLBC with respect to land management issues.
    • Development of specific revegetation and habitat restoration management plans at the property level.
