New Natural Resources Management Plan for KI

The KI NRM Board is currently developing a comprehensive regional NRM plan for Kangaroo Island covering the sustainable use and management of the Island’s natural resources – land, water and biodiversity. This new type of plan is supported by legislation (Natural Resources Management Act 2004).

Formal planning began with the release of a Concept Statement for the regional KI NRM Plan in June 2006. The statement outlined the scope and intention of the new plan. Community members and stakeholders were invited to 'plan for the future' in December 2006 in a well attended workshop which presented possible future scenarios for Kangaroo Island.

The Board met the day after this workshop to set goals for the KI NRM Plan and invited interested parties to attend soapbox sessions across the Island in March 2007.

The proposed visions and goals for sustainable natural resource management on Kangaroo Island were released soon after. Each of the three goals was supported by several strategic directions which were discussed in public meetings in August 2007 in Adelaide, Penneshaw, Kingscote and Parndana. The Board also received about 40 responses on the feedback form which have been taken into account in subsequent target setting workshops.

The KI NRM Board is keen to hear your ideas about the Island’s natural resources and how best to manage them. Contact the KI NRM Board to provide input in to the new NRM plan.

The success of the new KI NRM Board depends on more than plans – it relies on people. The Board continues to work with the local community, stakeholders and agencies to develop and implement a range of NRM activities through a variety of programs to achieve the targets identified for NRM in the plans. Current programs are outlined in the KI NRM Board’s Investment Strategies. Explore Taking Action for more information about these programs activities and accomplishments.
